Quick passing, tight marking and darting runs guided them to victory. Miss Slater and Miss Ablett are SO proud! They played the game in a fantastic spirit throughout, showing true determination and sportsmanship. We look forward to our match next week agaisnt Warboys! Well done netballers :)
Primary Steps 2 Work Work Visits In the first week of June, Year Six pupils from Thongsley Fields Primary School and Hartford Junior School who are participating in the Primary Steps 2 Work pilot project in Huntingdon, visited nine different places of work in the local area to find out what it is like to be an employee there and what goes on in their establishments. The ninety plus children that took part were organised into small groups according to their preferences and interests. Over the course of a week each group walked to their allocated site where they were given a whistle stop tour and also, the opportunity to ask employees about their roles and the skills they use each day. All of the visits proved to be invaluable eye openers for the children. Sam King, a pupil at Thongsley Fields Primary School said, “It was interesting seeing all the different jobs people are doing around Huntingdon. Another pupil, Joy Boampong stated, “It made me change my views about what I might want to be in the future,” when recounting her visit to the Old Bridge Hotel. Some groups visited Engineering companies, Forward Composites and Encocam where they enjoyed seeing the machines in action.  “It was pretty fun to see how they make the aluminium honeycomb, we got to stretch it out,” recalled Jake Gipp about his visit to Encocam. Other groups visited Murkett’s in Stukeley Meadows as well as the Huntingdon Library, the Leisure Centre and the Police and Fire Station. After visiting the Police Station Jordan Church asserted “it gave me a lot more confidence about becoming a policeman.” The organisers of the project said that a lot of organisation had gone into establishing the initial links and arranging these first visits. However, now that a precedent has been set, schools involved in the Primary Steps 2 work Project in the future, would be in a position to benefit from continued engagement with these local places of work. Motivator Day The Motivator Morning recently hosted by Hartford Primary School and Thongsley Fields Primary School on the 16th June as part of the Primary Steps 2 Work pilot project in Huntingdon was agreed, by all, to be a resounding success. “It was amazing!” said Teaching Assistant Christine Verrall, “the children got so much out of it.” In total 15 local companies and organisations provided motivators to spend a morning in school, helping children to understand the relevance of their learning. They presented two consecutive tasks inspired by their own use of Maths and English in the work place and the children had to work as a team using their knowledge skills and understanding to solve the problems they were presented with. “The engagement of the children was brilliant!” declared Mark Moffett of Hartford Junior School. “They really enjoyed it, it was amazing to see how the tasks motivated them,” said Sarah Matthews, KS2 leader at Thongsley Fields.  When asked about the experience, pupils asserted that it had helped them to realise what they would need in their life for work. One child declared that taking notes is more important than you think it is. Another stated that he did not know that fire fighters needed Maths. As well as realising that the skills they learn in school could one day be put to good use in the world of work, they also enjoyed the problem solving approach to the tasks. Pupils at Hartford were so engaged with trying to create an effective advert for a company running marketing courses that they asked if they could have longer and wanted to finish them after the event. Jordan Church of Thongsley Fields Primary School returned to the room to thank the motivators, also telling them, “You have inspired me to consider doing different jobs.” This was the second of three contact days between the PS2W motivators and Year 6 pupils from the two primary schools involved. They will all attend a third event which will announce the winner of a cartoon character design competition and launch the PS2W website (in which the cartoon character will feature). The event will also celebrate the participation, contributions and achievements of all those involved.
